20100902 – The Zany Zeppelin Quest

2010-09-02

From now on, September 2nd shall be known as Zeppelin Day.

As some of you may be aware, the worlds largest Zeppelin is in town and offering rides out of Paine Field in Everett, WA.

I run with a crowd that thinks this is extremely awesome and also devastating that tickets for rides are so expensive.

Today, in the Aurora Village Costco parking I looked up and there it was. I excitedly told Llyra to look. Then we called Sean to tell him to look. He couldn’t see it so we went to get him. Llyra had a theory that it was traveling south down the lake to downtown and would come back up along the sound so we planned to head to a park along the sound. Sean hopped in the car and off we went.

Heading towards Richmond Beach Park we crossed paths with the Zeppelin as it passed over our heads at 185th and Aurora. So we took a right and followed it up Aurora. All the while I’m sticking my head out the window to try and get pictures. We started to lose it as we had to stop for all those stoplights so we headed to I-5 and Paine Field. We saw it briefly again but then lost it as it made it’s descent.

We drove around Paine Field and just as we were about to give up, we saw it starting to take off. Llyra parked the car and we piled out like we were in a clown car. And just in time, as the Zeppelin was heading our way and flew right over us. SO COOL.

I’ll post links to the pictures when Llyra uploads them.

Then we headed over to the Paine Field Community Park which has a really neat playground with some wacky climbing structures and a really neat merry go round. I sat while Christopher dragged his parents around the playground.

And, yes, we listened to Led Zeppelin when we got back to the house.

Best quote came from Christopher, age 3, as it was starting to pull away from us: “Stay in the sky buddy!”

How awesome is it to have friends you can go on a zany, spontaneous Zeppelin quest with?

01/24/09: State Park of the Month: Deception Pass

2009-02-04

Deception Pass New Year Photo of Me

A rambling preamble first: As mention in my previous post, I had developed a tradition of picking up copies of the Washington State Park Calendar on the first day of the year at Deception Pass. As also mentioned, I was unable to make it there on the 1st due to pass closures. I had a few adventures (see future post about trip to Fort Simcoe) trying to find a state park gift store that I could buy the calendars at.
Meanwhile, since I felt that I needed to go to Deception Pass in January, I made plans with Critter and his parents (20 month olds need parents so they have a social secretary) to go there on the 24th. In addition to getting a calendar myself, I always get one as a birthday present for Critter’s daddy.
I had given up on my romantic notion of getting the calendars at a state park and ordered them on the internet. (It’s just not the same!) They arrived the day before our planned excursion. And, in serendipitous moment, I opened the calendar to discover that January’s state park of the month was … Deception Pass!
So the next day we all went to Deception Pass and I got my annual spirit renewal and we were all able to mark January’s park as visited. I may have not mentioned this before but we make an attempt to visit every state park featured in the calendar in the month they are featured.

Friendly Forest Critter

We parked at the main beach area. Wandered on a trail for a little while, walked down pass the big fire pit to the beach facing north, on the west side of the bridge. We created all kinds of havoc – throwing rocks in the water, moving large rocks around, sending logs out into the water to watch them move with the swift currents. Then we wandered off into the forest and walked around for a while.

Then we went home and ate dinner and watched the Muppet Movie. There are two bits from the Muppet Movie that really speak to my rambling self. First – the entire song Movin’ Right Along – it’s an excellent road trip song. Secondly – the part where Fozzie sings America the Beautiful, which is my favorite song about America, and then says “patriotism swells in the heart of the american bear”. Patriotism swells in me whenever I hear that song.

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

04/03/08: The Third Occasionally Annual Sonja Jo Birthday Cruise

2008-09-08

First of all, I had a totally excellent birthday cruise. Groovy people, a plethora of rainbows, and a gorgeous sunset. (And then big snow when driving back through Everett.) The rainbows were incredible and I feel like I was given a blessing from mother nature for my 39th birthday. I really enjoyed having a posse of my friend’s offspring there. Added bonus, I got a totally awesome hat from Julianne that is hot pink and black striped and COTTON. In fact, said hat is on my head right now.

Some great pictures were taken. Susan took this fabulous set:

And Scott took this other fabulous set:
